Rubric for Fighting Ground Assignment

The Fighting Ground

All students will be reading The Fighting Ground by Avi for their independent reading log.

Complete the book by __Nov 13th_________.

A comprehension test will be given on ____Nov. 17th__________. The Fighting Ground provides a unique perspective about the Revolutionary War from a young boy’s point of view and will supplement our social studies unit about the War for Independence. Students will also design a movie poster and a book report to be presented in class.

Purpose: Persuasive essay.

Essay: A five paragraph essay will be written and must include the followingelements:

Paragraph 1: Describe the main character, Jonathan, and one or two other important characters. Using details from the story describe Jonathan’s appearance, personality, strengths and weaknesses. Explain why these traits are important to the story. (8-10 sentences) Due Date: ___Nov. 20th____

Paragraph 2: Describe the setting of the story that you illustrated on the poster. Explain why the setting is important to the story. (5-7 sentences)
Due Date: _Nov. 25th_____

Paragraph 3: Describe the plot of the story using sequence of events. The final sentence of this paragraph should describe Jopnathan’s main problem.
(8-10 sentences) Due Date: ____Dec. 2nd____

Paragraph 4: Describe the main conflict and climax in the story. The climax is the part of the story where it is the most intense and the characters are having the most difficult time. Conclude this paragraph by explaining how the character solved his problem. (8-10 sentences) Due Date: ___Dec. 8th_____

Paragraph 5: Describe your thoughts and feelings about the story. Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? Would you recommend it? Why? Did the writing move you? Would you read another book by this author? This paragraph is where you discuss your thoughts and feelings about the book. (5-7 sentences) Due Date: __Dec. 11th______

Presentation: Be prepared to “sell” your movie poster so we would want to go see the movie. Your presentation will be a two minute commercial about your “movie”.

Poster: Design a movie poster for The Fighting Ground, by Avi. Cast the major character, Jonathan, as your lead actor. Include a scene for the background that illustrates the setting of the story. The poster should be well drawn and colored. The title of the book, author’s name, genre and main character must be included.

  2. Cool Zoie I am so glad you figured out how to comment. Now we can talk, although when I get online it is usually after 8:30 so it may be after you go to bed. But eventually you will get my message. Did you check out the math sites?
