Week of Dec. 14th - Dec. 18th

Well we are one week away from break! I am so sorry last week's posting was not available, I had some problems with the blog uploading. I apologize for any inconvenience.

This week will be a busy one, but should be fun!

Thank you first of all for all who attended the American Revolution Walk Through. We are in the process of putting together a DVD with your childrens' participation in the Walk Through. You will be able to buy a copy if you wish. More information on this soon.

Also thank you for all that are interested in attending the Atwater Space Challenger Field trip. It looks like it will be a go and have about 2/3 of the class interested! More on this when we return.

** Keep the recycling coming. We have about $70 so far and the students wanted to reach $100 before Christmas. We still have a week.

ASSIGNMENTS for the Week:

* I will not be assigning any homework for the students; unless they do not finish up classwork then they will need to finish it at home.

* I will also not have spelling words this week.

We will however have the Math summative test (the lessons from the previous month and a half. If you would like to go to the adopted Math site it is linked to this blog. It will be chapters 4 through 6. This test will be on Tuesday. We have been studying for it and they will be able to use their notes. I will send home a study guide on Monday night.

The final project for the Fighting Ground is due on Thursday. The students will be presenting their posters and 2-3 minute commercial on Friday. The rubric is posted here on the blog.

We are also finishing up in class, The Nutcracker. They will be responsible for some assignments in class. If they do not finish they will need to take them home.

On Friday we will have a small (Christmas/Pajama)party. We will be ordering pizza, thank you for those of you who have sent the $2. If you have not done so yet it would be appreciated if you could send it in by Wednesday. Children will need to bring their own drinks.

**Snacks if you would like to help out on Friday I did split up the snack list between the students so that I do not have 30 dz. cookies. Talk to your child/or email me if you have a question on what to send or bring if you are joining us.

We will be watching the Polar Express on Friday morning around 10:30 or so. We will be having hot chocolate too!(Yum)

Thank you for all that you do as a family and for helping me help your child succeed! I wish all of you the best holiday season and see you all next year, 2010!

Nov. 30th - Dec. 4th

Wow It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!!

Before we know it we will be on winter break and welcoming 2010, we only have 15 more instructional days. I know we need to make the most of them and they sure will be very busy!

This week we will be busy preparing for our American Walk Through. We have painted many props and will finish up on Monday and Tuesday. We will also be rehearsing our parts. Please remind your children to rehearse their parts at home. Remember it is not necessary to buy a costume, but have them use their imagination and dress up from what they can find at home. For example, baseball pants with white long socks for the men characters. They can make a wig out of construction paper (I can provide the paper) and add cotton balls at home for the hair, or yarn. Bonnets from square pieces of material. Long skirts work wonderful for the girls. Old vests look like the 1700's, shirts with ruffles and lace. Look in closets or the Salvation army for low cost if you really would like to buy some outfits. More importantly let's have fun.

I sure hope to see many of you on Thursday. It will be from 12:15 until 2:45. Parents are welcome to come and go if you are only able to stay for a while. Any adults are welcome to come: Aunts, Uncles, or grandparents.

This week we will be back into the routine of normal days. Academically we will continue teaching about the American Revolution through the winter break. In math we will be moving quite quickly so please work with your children at home if possible. We will finish up chapter 4 fractions and decimals by the middle of next week, then begin chapter 5 which continues with fractions, addition, subtraction with like and unlike denominators. Just a caution "STUDENTS MUST KNOW THEIR MULTIPLICATION FACTS" or these next few weeks will be very difficult.

This week's spelling will be a little different, we will have a list of 20 words that the students have encountered through our study of the American Revolution. There may not be a "spelling pattern" but many were commonly misspelled by the students.

We will finish up learning about the three battles: Lexington & Concord, Trenton, and Yorktown by the end of the week. The students will have a test on the battles next week on Monday. They have a study guide we have been working with in class they may take it home to study.

We will also be having a test on the colonies and the information on each one this Friday. The students also have index cards on that information.

Homework for this week:
Monday:
Math: Fractions Least Common Multiple (Chapter 4)
SS: Study colonies' information
SS: Study your part for walk through
Writing: Fighting Ground paragraph #3 due on Wednesday!!!

Tuesday:
Math: Fractions Least Common Denominator (Chapter 4)

If you should have any further questions or concerns please do not hesitate to call, email or stop by, my door is always open.

Next week will be a very busy week. Our American Walk Through will be next Thursday. The students are so excited. It will be Thursday Dec. 3rd from 12:15 to 2:45 in room A6 (Mrs. Lee's room next to ours). Please stop by and bring grandpas, grandmas, or any family members that would enjoy watching your children perform.
Thank you to the parents that so graciously already paid the $12 cost of the program, is you have not done so yet and could please do so ASAP, we would greatly appreciate it.

After the Walk Through our next project will be our State-A-Thon. More on that to follow.

The three weeks after we return from Thanksgiving will sure go by quickly, so try to hold on because it is going to be a fast ride of activities and fast learning. Check the blog often for more information to follow. Have a great 4 days!! Talk to you soon.

Week of Nov. 23rd

This week will be a very busy and extremely short week!

The students will not have regular homework this week, instead they will have assignments to finish, and studying for a quick test.

Monday night's homework:
**Finish the American Revolution Character if you did not finish it in class (this is only a small part of your grade)
**Finish the 1 page Biography to accompany your character. (this part of the project will be most of your grade)
**Both parts are due Tues. Nov. 24th

Tuesday night's homework:
**Finish the 2nd paragraph on the Fighting Ground's Essay. This is the paragraph on the setting. It is due Wed. Nov. 25th
** Study for spelling/vocab test names of 13 colonies.

This week we will not have 20 spelling words, instead the students will only have to study the 13 colonies. They will have to learn them and know how to spell them correctly. These colonies will be their "spelling/vocab" words for the week, and will have a test on Wednesday.

When we return from Thanksgiving break we will have a test on information and facts on the colonies.

This week we will be painting and creating our props for our play "The American Revolution Walk Through". We will be painting all three days probably from about 9:30 until 10:45 or so (approximate times). If there are any parents that would enjoy creating, helping and or directing our acting, painting: boats, bushes, logs, campfires, ect... for our play and would like to help I WOULD GREATLY GREATLY APPRECIATED IT.

All of you (parents & grandparents) that have helped in the creating of our American Revolution Characters, once again Thank You!!!! You are wonderful!

Alright here is a list of the 13 colonies just in case the students left them at school:
Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Virginia

Students here is this week's riddle:

If Delaware was the first colony to become a state in 12-7-1787. How long has Deleware been a state in the United States of America?

Let's see how many can figure this out, write the answer on the back of your spelling test and you will get 3 extra points.

Web Site Challenge

Not many of my students are visiting our class site, at least they are not telling me they are.
Visit some of our math links, and educational links. Also keep posted so you know what is coming up and what you need to do.

So here is the Website challenge:

I am posting this riddle, if you solve it leave a comment telling me you solved it and post your name, BUT do not leave the answer. Instead tell me the answer in class tomorrow. If you get the answer correct then you will get $10 Schisnewski Bucks from me. Be careful you don't want to give away the answer.

Ready here is my Riddle:

Take the number of months in a year and multiply it by two. Then add 1/2 a dozen to that number. Next add one decade. Finally add 3 to the power of 2 to that number. You will get the exact number of Christmas trees Mrs. Schisnewski is going to start putting up this weekend.

Good Luck!!!

Multiplication Tables & Division Practice

GIRLS!!!!!!!
I just added a new website just for you!!! Become a fashion model as you earn new styles of clothes for your model while learning your multiplication tables. Go to the multiplication tables website and try it out. Then leave me a comment and tell me what you think.

Boys!!!!!
You get to WACK A MOLE when you get the right answer for your multiplication problems. So give it a try and have some fun! I hope you like the site.

In addition I also added a Division practice site with an awesome racetrack with race cars to practice your division facts and multiplication facts. As well as space invaders everyone is going to love this site, I couldn't stop playing it!

Mrs. Schisnewski

P.S. Of course if either boys or girls would like to try both sites it's o.k. they are both good sites for both boys and girls. Girls can also Wack a Mole, and there are plenty of boys who are great models too!

** Thank you parents who have already sent the $12 for our American Revolution Walk-Through presentation! We need to have the money before Dec. 3rd. It is a wonderful experience for our children and parents are welcome to attend also. The children are so excited, learning and practicing their parts. We can't wait!

**Can't wait to see you at the Parent/Teacher conferences, I am looking forward to speaking to each and everyone of you! If your child would like to attend the conference that is o.k. with me, this conference is just as much their conference too! They are responsible for their learning and I believe they need to be aware of what is going on. See you this week.

Correction

Dear Parents,
A few corrections to the previous posting:

1st Correction:
The American Character Project:
This project DOES NOT have to be in the shape of a turkey. I guess in the past students have created a turkey so I was under the impression the character had to resemble a turkey. The only criteria is that it resemble the American Revolution Character your son/daughter is researching for their part of the American Revolution Walk-through.

2nd Correction:
We will start building the characters this Friday in the afternoon. So I need the parent help in the afternoon from 1:00 until at least 2:15.

3rd Correction:
The students will be writing a 1 page biography on their American Revolution Character. I would like them to focus solely on their character's life during the revolution times, and/or impact on the revolution. We will be working on this biography in class. However, there will be times when they will be asked to take the assignment home to re-write, add, or edit information. This 1 page biography will be due Tuesday Nov. 24th.

Monday Nov. 9th

This week will go by so quickly! I am so excited to be back!!! I sure missed my students!!
We will not have spelling words this week due to the middle of the week day off (Veteran's Day) and Bench Mark Testing this week. We will instead focus on our vocabulary words for our story Katie's Trunk as well as focus on finishing up reading "The Fighting Ground". I hope all the students are almost finished. We will have our comprehension test on Tuesday of next week.

This is this week's tentative schedule:

Vocabulary/spelling: words from story and their definitions: Katie's Trunk

arming
skittish
fierce
justice
kin
peered
rebels
skirmish

Math (Chapter 4: Fractions, Least Common Multiple, Greatest Common Factor)
New concepts we will begin teaching this week. These concepts will be very difficult. Please! Please! review with your children their multiplication and division facts, they need to know these.

Social Studies:
We will continue studying the American Revolution. Anything your child can research on their character will help them with their paragraph they will be writing this week and next.

Turkey Project:
We will begin building a turkey in the shape of their American Revolution Character. We will start this on Friday in the Art studio at school. If any parents would like to help I am signed up for Friday morning at 9:00 a.m. I would love your help! We will be building a turkey to resemble each of the students' character they are studying. They are welcome to bring in items from home to decorate their turkey. I will explain more in class so your children can explain to you.

For now that is all. Please remember parent/teacher conferences are coming up the week of Nov. 18th - Nov. 24th. I look forward to discussing your child's progress!

Mrs. Schisnewski

P.S. Please keep the bottles and aluminum cans coming we need to keep raising funds!

Math - Written out math problems multiplication of decimals

Thursday's Homework
Math -Homework was canceled to give students time to finish their essay due on Friday.

*** Dear Parents,
I would like to offer an apology on some confusion on Tuesday night's math homework. The concept we learned that day for math and the math for homework was different I made the mistake when I asked the students to pull out the page, because we were so rushed. Some of the students may have been confused. We clarified the concepts today. Thank you for being understanding!

On a second note, I am going to spend a few more days on decimals and division. I thought we would be finished with multiplication and division by Friday, but we have not even begun division. Therefore we WILL NOT TAKE OUR QUIZ on multiplication and division of decimals on Friday. We will have the quiz Friday of next week. The students need more review of the concept.

Welcome to our Class Site

Dear Parents,
Many Parents have asked for a web site for our class. Well here it is!
I will try to update it daily with homework and any announcements we may have. You could also leave any messages or emails at this blog, or use the normal school web email too. That email works well because I check it many times during the day, where this email I may only check it once.
